Registration

1. What is the fee to register?

The fees vary depending on the date you register. The registration fee structure is as follows:

  • Monday, September 10, 2018 - Thursday, January 31, 2019: $30
  • Friday, February 1 - Tuesday, April 30, 2019: $40
  • Wednesday, May 1 - Wednesday, July 31, 2019: $50
  • Thursday, August 1 - Saturday, September 7, 2019: $60

2. Is my registration fee a donation?

As there are many costs associated with the tour that are not sponsored, your registration fee will be used to offset our bike tour costs. You will not receive a tax receipt for your registration fee.

3. Is there an age restriction to participate?

Yes; participants must be 12 years of age or older.

4. Can I refund or transfer my registration fee if I choose not to participate?

Unfortunately, registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

5. Is there a minimum fundraising amount?

Yes; you must fundraise a minimum of $350 to be permitted to participate in the tour.

6. Do I have to register as part of a team?

You are welcome to ride as an individual but it’s more fun to ride in the tour as a team! The energy that comes from participating on a team is contagious! Don’t have a team to join? Start one! All you need is a few friends to ride with and a fun team name.

7. Can another member be added to an existing team?

Upon registering online, you can easily join an existing team. If you are already registered, please contact Amber at amber.tkachuk@mssociety.ca or (780) 409-8743 to be added to a team.

8. Where and when do I pick up my cyclist package and drop off my pledges?

You can pick up your cyclist package the week before the tour from September 3rd to 5th. Please note packages will only be distributed to riders who have fundraised the $350 minimum. See details below:

Accommodations

1. I am from out of town. What are my options for overnight accommodation in Hinton?

Please note that riders are responsible for booking their own accommodations. There are a few options for accommodations in Hinton:

  • Camping at the Hinton Campground located right next to our start/finish line at the Hinton Centre (965 Switzer Dr, Hinton, AB T7V 1X8). Please phone (780) 865-0876 to book your spot.
  • Staying at one of the several hotels in Hinton. Be sure to book early as rooms fill up quickly. Please note that there are no shuttles to and from the Hinton Centre; participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation.

Pre-Tour Information

1. Are there any training rides available?

Yes, Bike Town Alberta (The Town of Devon) offers training rides to prepare you for the tour. Rides occur every Wednesday in the Edmonton river valley prior to the tour starting in early August. Email Stew at stewarth2@gmail.com to be added to the communications list to receive weekly training ride information.

2. Are any pre-tour events?

Absolutely! We have a Team Prep Rally on March 21st, a Pub Night on April 18th, two United Sport & Cycle Shop Nights (one on April 30th and one on June 4th), and a tailgate party at our first training ride in early August. We'd love to see you there! Stay tuned for more details or contact Amber at amber.tkachuk@mssociety.ca if you have any questions.

3. How can I get involved in the tour other than riding?

There are many ways to get involved in the tour besides riding! We are always looking for volunteers as the tour would simply not be possible without our incredible volunteers! Please contact jody.deckert@mssociety.ca for more information.

4. What type of bike do I need?

Mountain bikes are strongly recommended. Full suspension or hard tail bikes are ideal. Please contact Amber at amber.tkachuk@mssociety.ca if you have additional questions.

5. I need new gear for the tour, can I get any discounts?

You are in luck! Our wonderful partners at United Sport & Cycle offer tour participants two exclusive shop nights prior to the tour. They’ll be taking place on Tuesday, April 30th and Tuesday, June 4th starting at 6:30pm, and both will be hosting great deals to get you ready for the tour!

7. Where and when do I pick up my Cyclist Package?

Package pick up week will be held the week before the tour from September 3rd-5th and on the Saturday morning of the tour.* Please see locations and hours below:

Tour Weekend Information

1. If I am unable to ride in the tour, can someone else ride in my place?

No, unfortunately registration for the tour is non-refundable and non-transferrable.

2. What kind of support do I receive along the route?

The route is fully supported! There are checkpoints approximately every 10-15 km along the way with refreshments, snacks, lunch, and washroom facilities. We offer medical support, bike marshals (riders who offer assistance and monitor safety along the route), and United Sport & Cycle bike mechanics for any mechanical support needed. Please note: there are some areas along the route with no cellphone reception, so be sure to always ride with a buddy!

3. Can my friends and family watch along the way?

Absolutely! Friends and family are welcome to watch and cheer at the start/finish line at the Hinton Centre and along the route at checkpoints. Maps including driving directions to each checkpoint can be found at the following links:

4. What time are the checkpoints open?

Day 1 (Saturday):

  • Checkpoint 1: 9:00am - 11:30am
  • Checkpoint 2: 10:00am - 1:30pm
  • Lunch: 10:00am - 2:00pm
  • Checkpoint 3: 11:00am - 3:00pm
  • Checkpoint 4: 12:30pm - 5:00pm
  • Finish Line: 2:00pm - 5:00pm

Day 2 (Sunday):

  • Checkpoint 1: 9:00am - 12:00pm
  • Checkpoint 2: 10:00am - 1:00pm
  • Checkpoint 3: 11:00am - 4:00pm

5. Do I need to bring my own food?

Food is provided throughout the tour. We offer a light breakfast for both Saturday and Sunday, snacks and lunch along the route, dinner on Saturday evening, and a celebration BBQ at the finish line on Sunday. We do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions including vegetarian and gluten free options. However, we do strongly encourage that riders bring their own food if they are on a restricted diet. 6. What do I do if I can no longer ride during the tour?

There is transportation along the route that is in touch with all mechanical and medical support. If you can no longer ride, please inform a volunteer at any checkpoint and they will help arrange a ride. Transportation is limited to checkpoints along the route as much of the route is inaccessible by vehicle.

7. If I don’t complete the tour, can I still attend the dinner and program?

Of course! Please come join in the festivities!

8. What time is dinner on Saturday?

Doors to dinner will be open at 6pm.

9. Can my friends and family come to the dinner and dance?

Yes! Guest tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 each.

10. Where do I store my bike overnight?

All bikes will be stored at the Day 1 finish line at Kelley’s Bathtub. The bikes are monitored overnight by security. If you are nervous about leaving your bike in the compound it is your responsibility to transport your bike to and from Kelley’s Bathtub. The MS Society assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen items.

11. Do I need ID for the beer gardens?

Yes, we ID anyone that looks under 30.

12. Is the Hinton Centre wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the Centre is wheelchair accessible. There is accessible parking, access to the building and accessible washrooms.


Post-Tour Information

1. Can my friends and family join me at the finish line for the BBQ?

Absolutely! We encourage family and friends to come join you to celebrate your completion of the tour on Sunday. Please have them meet you at the finish line at the Hinton Centre. Guest tickets for the BBQ are $5 each.

2. If I did not cycle Day 2 of the tour, where can I pick up my bike?

All bikes left in the Bike Storage area or on the route will be transported to the finish line at the Hinton Centre where they will be stored in a secured area until claimed. All unclaimed bikes at the end of the tour will be brought to the MS Society office in Edmonton. Please contact Amber at amber.tkachuk@mssociety.ca or (780) 409-8743 to arrange picking up your bike at the office.

3. Where do I enquire regarding lost and found items?

4. When is the fundraising deadline?

You have until September 30th, 2019 to submit your donations.


Donating, Fundraising, & Rewards

1. When can I start fundraising?

You can begin fundraising as soon as you are registered! Registration is now open at msbike.ca! We accept donations for the tour until September 30th, 2019.*

*Please Note: You must raise the minimum of $350 prior to riding in the tour on September 7th and 8th.

2. What is the minimum fundraising required? What happens if I don’t meet the minimum?

The minimum pledge amount is $350. If you do not meet the minimum amount, you will not receive your cyclist package and will not be able to participate in the tour.

3. Can I refund or transfer a donation?

Yes, please contact Amber at amber.tkachuk@mssociety.ca or (780) 409-8743 to refund or transfer your donation.

4. How do tax receipts work for donors?

We offer tax receipts for any donors who contributed $20 and over. Online donors will automatically receive a tax receipt within 24 hours of their donation via email* and offline donors (cash and cheque) can expect to receive their tax receipt via mail within four months of their donation.

*Please note for online donors: Check your junk/spam folder as sometimes your emailed tax receipts end up there.

5. Where do my fundraising dollars go?

All money raised in Canada stays within the MS Society of Canada. Proceeds raised fund both world-class research and innovative programs and services for people impacted by MS in your community.

6. How do I/my donors submit pledges?

To turn in pledge money:

  1. Credit Card donations are accepted online at msbike.ca.
    To donate to a cyclist click DONATE, search your cyclist’s name to donate directly to them.*
    *Please note donations made to a team (rather an individual) will go directly to the Team Captain.
  2. Via Mail: Cheques should be submitted with a donation tracking form found in your Participant Centre mailed to the MS Society at #150 9405 50 Street, Edmonton, AB, T6B 2T4. (Please make all cheques payable to the MS Society of Canada).
  3. Feel free to stop by our office in person with pledges at any time before or after the tour. We’re located at Suite 150, 9405 50 St Edmonton and open Monday-Friday from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.
  4. Turn in pledges when you stop by to pick up your Cyclist Package during Package Pick up Week (September 3rd - 5th).
  5. The morning of the bike tour inside the Hinton Centre at the start line.

7. When is the deadline for donations to be handed in?

The deadline for donations to be handed in is September 30th, 2019.

9. If I am eligible for a reward, how and where do I collect it?

  • $350 Level: Cyclist Packages and t-shirts can be picked up during package pick up week.
  • $1,000 Level: $1,000 Club Jerseys can be picked up at the MS Society office in Edmonton starting in late March 2019.
    • Please note: All cyclists who raise over $1000 are also invited to our Dinner of Champions to be held in November 2019. Invitations will be sent out via email.
  • $2,000 Level: $2000 Club Shorts can be picked up at the MS Society office in Edmonton starting in late March 2019.
  • $3,500+ Level: Please make your gift card selection (United Sport & Cycle, Rona, Chapters, or Mission First [a tax receipt in lieu of a gift card]) when you come to pick up your jersey and shorts, or contact Amber at amber.tkachuk@mssociety.ca to do so. Prize pick up week to retrieve gift cards will be held in October.
    • If you do not receive your gift card by December 2019, please contact Amber at amber.tkachuk@mssociety.ca. No 2019 gift cards will be issued in the New Year.
  • $12,500+ Level (Individual Total) or $50,000 (Team Total): Please contact Nicole at nicole.gasior@mssociety.ca for more information on the Tour of Champions.

Participant Centre

1. What is a personal page?

A personal page is a unique personal webpage provided to you for you to use when asking your friends and family to join your team or to make a donation. You have a default page created for you, but you can personalize this page with your own story by signing in, selecting the “Personal Page” tab, and saving any changes you make.

2. How do I sign into my Participant Centre?

From any page of msbike.ca, click the "Login" link at the top-right of your screen. Enter your username and password; then, once logged in, you’ll be automatically directed to the home page of your Participant Centre.

If you are registered for more than one event, you can access your other Participant Centre(s) by selecting the event after you log in.

3. I forgot my username and/or password. What do I do?

Remember that your username and password are case sensitive. If you have forgotten your username and/or password, you can retrieve it by selecting “Forgot your password or username?” when on the log in page. For further assistance, please contact Amber at amber.tkachuk@mssociety.ca or 780-409-8743.

4. How do I change my username, password, email preferences, and/or personal information?

First, sign in to the site using your username and password by clicking the "Login" link at the top-right of the page. Once signed in, click on the "Profile" link to the top right-hand side (next to the “Log Out” button). Click on the “Change/Reset Password" link to update your new password. Click “Edit Your Profile” to change your username and other details of your profile such as mailing address and mailing preferences.

5. How can I see who has donated to me?

Sign in to your Participant Centre and select the “Progress” navigation tab. Scroll down to see your donation receipt history.

6. How do I change my personal goal?

Sign in to your Participant Centre. Under the “Home” tab, select “Change” where it shows your goal. Write the new amount and hit “Submit”.

7. How do I change my team name or team goal?

The Team Captain can change the team goal by signing in to their Participant Centre, clicking the “Progress” tab, and selecting the “Team” tab on the right-hand side. Then simply click the “Change” button under the Team Goal. To change the team's name, please contact Makhanna at makhanna.seerattan@mssociety.ca.


Teams

1. How do I register a team?

First register yourself in order to create a team. You’ll be prompted to create a team during the registration process. Be sure to pick a creative team name!

If you already registered as an individual, but would like to join or start a team, please contact Lisa at lisa.brooks@mssociety.ca with the name of the team you'd like to join or start (in addition to the team fundraising goal, if starting a team).

2. How do I change my team name or team goal?

The Team Captain can change the team goal by signing in to their Participant Centre, clicking the “Progress” tab, and selecting the “Team” tab on the right-hand side. Then simply click the “Change” button under the Team Goal. To change the team's name, please contact Lisa at lisa.brooks@mssociety.ca.

3. My team wants to create a custom team jersey! Who should we go through?

Our national MS Bike apparel sponsor, Primal Wear has great solutions for team apparel and a 15% give-back program. Create a team jersey all team members can wear when training to promote your team and MS Bike! Please note that orders take approximately 6 weeks total, so be sure to order with enough time before the tour!
