MS Bike - Riding Mountain FAQ


Registration

1. What is the fee to register?

The fees vary depending on the date you register; the fee structure is as follows:

  • August 27, 2018 - January 31, 2019: $15
  • February 1, 2019 - April 30, 2019: $25
  • May 1, 2019 - June 30, 2019: $35
  • July 1, 2019 - event date: $50

2. Is my registration fee a donation?

As there are many costs associated with the tour that are not sponsored, your registration fee will be used to offset our bike tour costs. You will not receive a tax receipt for your registration fees.

3. Is there an age restriction to participate?

Yes; participants must be 10 years of age or older.

4. Can I refund or transfer my registration fee if I choose not to participate?

Unfortunately, registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

5. Is there a minimum fundraising amount?

Yes; you must fundraise a minimum of $300 to be permitted to participate in the tour.

6. Can I register as an individual?

Yes, you can register as an individual. However, if you have friends or family that want to join you, we can set you up as a team.

7. This is my first-year riding and I don’t know many cyclists. Is there a way to meet other riders?

Yes! We have our Rookie team, Team Huldufolk, which brings together first year riders as a way to get to know other cyclists. Team Huldufolk is led by a long-time volunteer who can help you learn all about cycling as part of a group, nutrition and what to expect. We also have any training rides and pre-Bike Weekend events that are great opportunities to meet your fellow riders.

8. Can I register as a team?

Absolutely! The more cyclists, the merrier! Contact your Bike Coordinator at (204) 943-9595 for help registering your team and to learn more.

9. What is the benefit of being on a team?

Everything is more fun with family, friends and co-workers by your side!

Strengthen your impact fundraising is easier with the support of your team! It’s proven that your fundraising increases when you are part of a team.

Show your spirit wear your team colours through your jerseys, add hats and banners to identify your team!

Increase your corporate visibility corporate teams are a great way to gain exposure for your company as well as grow camaraderie amongst your colleagues.

Your team can help keep your motivation and fundraising on track.

10. Can another member be added to an existing team?

Upon registering online, you can easily join an existing team. If you are already registered, please contact your Bike Coordinator at (204) 943-9595 to be added to a team.

11. Where and when do I pick up my cyclist package and drop off my pledges?

You can pick up your cyclist package during our Advance Check-In Dates, the week of the event. Please note cyclist packages will only be distributed to cyclists who have fundraised the $300 minimum. See details below:

Otherwise, you can check-in for the event on-site on Saturday, September 7th. However, by checking in on-site you will need to make sure that you have $300 to turn in with you.

12. What do I need to bring when I Check-in for the event?

When you check-in for the MS Bike, bring all of your cash and cheque donations, your pledge sheets and money/prize submission form. Please ensure that the forms are filled in with complete details, so we can know where to send tax receipts to your donors. If we don’t have the proper information, we are unable to do so.

13. I am a Team Captain, can I pick up my whole team’s t-shirts and prizing?

Yes! As a Team Captain, you can pick up your whole team’s t-shirts and prizing (excluding gift card prizing, as they will be available at a later date). You will have to make sure that each member of your team has raised the minimum of $300 each before you do so.

14. Can I pick up another cyclist’s registration packet?

Yes! You can pick up a friend or family members registration packet. However, you will have to make sure that each person has raised the minimum of $300 each before you do so.

15. What if I get more donations after I have already checked in for the event?

That is not a problem! You can turn in any additional donations the day of the event at our event check-in located in the Dauphin Recreation Centre or by visiting our office at 100-1465 Buffalo Place in Winnipeg prior to September 23, 2019.

16. What if all of my fundraising has been done online? Do I still need to check-in?

Yes, each person will need to check-in to receive their cyclist registration kit, event shirt and any prizing.

1. What are my options for overnight accommodation in Dauphin and Clear Lake?

There are many options for overnight accommodations for the MS Bike Riding Mountain event. See below for options:

3. How do I get to my hotel or cottage from the Elkhorn Riding Stables?

Many of the accommodations are within walking distance to the Elkhorn Riding Stables. We will also be offering services by the Shuttle Bug service to take participants to and from accommodations.

4. Are there showers available?

Not onsite at the start and finish line, however, many of the accommodations do have them available.


Pre-Tour Information

1. Are there any training rides available?

Yes! We will be offering five different training ride options throughout the summer to help cyclists train and gear up for the ride. All cycling levels and abilities are welcome!

2. Are any pre-tour events?

Yes! We will be hosting a many different pre-tour events, see below:

Training Rides Dates and times TBD
We will be hosting five training rides ahead of the event weekend to help cyclists train for the ride by learning how to ride in a group, nutrition, basic bike mechanics and getting used to an endurance event.

Pub Night Date TBD
The Pub Night is a great opportunity to bring your team together and meet other cyclists ahead of the event, learn about fundraising tips and tricks and get a preview of the event weekend.

Bike Launch August 20th 4-7 pm
Stop by the MS Society office and get your bike tuned up by some our Bike Shop Sponsors (Bikes and Beyond, Olympia Cycle on Portage and Woodcock Cycleworks). Enjoy a hotdog, bag of chips and a drink as you meet other cyclists and have the option to turn in your pledges ahead of the event.

3. How can I get involved in the tour other than cycling?

There are many ways to get involved in the tour besides cycling! We are always looking for volunteers as the tour would simply not be possible without our incredible volunteers! Please contact Mariell.Barratt@mssocieyt.ca or call her at (204) 943-9595 ext. 4910.

4. What type of bike do I need?

Road bikes are not required, but strongly recommended. Your bike must be road-ready and safe!

5. Is the MS Bike Riding Mountain event on social media?

Yes! We're on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Use @mssocietymb to find us!


Tour Weekend Information

1. If I am unable to ride in the tour, can someone else ride in my place?

No, unfortunately registration for the tour is non-refundable and non-transferrable.

2. What kind of support do I receive along the route?

The tour is a fully supported route! We offer multiple check points approximately every 10-20km along the way. Checkpoints include refreshments, snacks, and washroom facilities. We offer medical support (trained professional medical personnel), bike marshals (cyclists who offer assistance along the route and monitor cyclist safety), SAG vehicles (pick up cyclists who cannot finish the tour or need a break from cycling), and bike mechanics from Stream ‘N Wood and A&L Cycle (for any cyclists with mechanical issues).

3. Can my friends and family watch along the way?

Yes, friends and family are welcome to support you along the way. They are welcome to watch at the start/finish line and from rest stops along the route.

4. Do I need to bring my own food?

We provide food for the whole tour; we offer breakfast for both Saturday and Sunday, snacks and lunch along the route both days, dinner on Saturday evening and a celebration lunch Sunday. However, you may choose to bring your own snacks. We do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions but strongly recommend you bring your own food if you are on a restricted diet. 5. What do I do if I can no longer ride during the tour?

Support and Gear (SAG) vehicles pick up cyclists who cannot finish the tour or need a break from cycling. Cyclists will be taken to the next rest stop along the route. Snag a SAG by safely getting off your bike and holding your helmet up in the air.

6. Once I arrive at the Elkhorn Riding Stables, how should I spend my afternoon?

Once you get your accommodations sorted (set up your tent, settle into your RV, check into your dorm or hotel), please come back to the Elkhorn Riding Stables Centre to join the celebration! There will be a Beer Gardens - where 100% of the proceeds go towards the MS Society (please bring cash!) and Rider Village. Enjoy music, games and socialize with fellow riders and visit the various team tents!

7. What is Rider’s Village?

Rider Village is an area on the event site that cyclists can hang out in and cheer on other cyclists as they finish the event. Join us for a beer garden, music, snacks and games! This are is open to everyone!

The Top 5 fundraising teams from 2018 will have their own small tent to use for the weekend. We encourage you to bring decorations and fun activities to make your tent a festive area during the weekend. Due to our Liquor Permit for the beer garden, you are not allowed to bring in outside alcohol.

8. How does my team get a spot in Rider’s Village?

The Top 5 Fundraising Teams from the previous year are pre-assigned spots in the Village.

9. If I don’t complete the tour, can I still attend the dinner and dance?

Of course! Please come join in the festivities!

10. Do I need to be at the Elkhorn Riding Stables for a certain time?

Doors open for dinner at 5:00 pm and dinner is served starting at 5:30 pm, followed by a short program. We encourage all cyclists to attend.

11. Can my friends and family come to the dinner?

Yes! Guest tickets can be purchased ahead of time by visiting www.msbike.ca or by calling the MS Society office at (204) 943-9595 or on-site at the information booth at the Dauphin Recreation Centre for $35 using cash, cheque or credit.

12. Where do I store my bike overnight?

We store all bikes in a secured compound, on the Elkhorn Riding Stables grounds that is locked and monitored by 24-hour security.

13. Do I need ID for the beer gardens?

Yes, we ID anyone that looks under 30.


Post-Tour Information

1. Can my friends and family join me at the finish line for the lunch?

Absolutely! We encourage family and friends to come join you to celebrate your completion of the tour on Sunday. Please have them meet you at the finish line. The celebration lunch will be held from 11:30 am 1:30 pm and guest tickets are $10.

2. If I did not cycle Day 2 of the tour, where can I pick up my bike?

All bikes will remain in our bike storage, until picked claimed. All unclaimed bikes at the end of the tour will be brought to the MS Society office (100-1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg).

3. Where do I enquire regarding lost and found items?

During the event, lost and found items will be turned into the Information booth. Any items that are not claimed will be taken to the Winnipeg office (100-1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg) for pick up. Please contact Leann at Leann.Bower@mssociety.ca or (204) 943-9595 ext. 4100 to claim lost items.


Donating, Fundraising, & Rewards

1. When can I start fundraising?

You can begin fundraising as soon as you are registered! Registration is now open at msbike.ca! We accept donations for the tour until September 23, 2019.*

*Please Note: You must raise the minimum of $300 prior to riding in the tour on September 7th and 8th.

2. What is the minimum fundraising required? What happens if I don’t meet the minimum?

The minimum pledge amount is $300. If you do not meet the minimum amount, you will not receive your cyclist package and will not be able to participate in the tour.

3. How do tax receipts work for donors?

We offer tax receipts for any donors who contributed $20 and over. Online donors will automatically receive a tax receipt within 24 hours of their donation via email* and offline donors (cash and cheque) can expect to receive their tax receipt via mail within four months of their donation.

*Please note for online donors: Check your junk/spam folder as sometimes your emailed tax receipts end up there.

4. Where do my fundraising dollars go?

All money raised in Canada stays within the MS Society of Canada. Proceeds raised fund both world-class research and innovative programs and services for people impacted by MS in your community.

5. How do I submit pledges?

To turn in pledge money:

  1. Credit Card donations are accepted online at msbike.ca.
    To donate to a cyclist click DONATE, search your cyclist’s name to donate directly to them.*
    *Please note donations made to a team (rather an individual) will go directly to the Team Captain.
  2. Via Mail: Cheques should be submitted with a donation tracking form found in your Participant Centre mailed to the MS Society at #100-1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg, MB R3T 1L8. (Please make all cheques payable to the MS Society of Canada).
  3. Feel free to stop by our office in person with pledges at any time before or after the tour. We’re located at #100-1465 Buffalo Place and open Monday-Friday from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
  4. Turn in pledges when you stop by to pick up your Cyclist Package during Advance Check-in on September 10th.
  5. The morning of the bike tour inside the Dauphin Recreation Centre at the start line.

6. When is the deadline for donations to be handed in?

The deadline for donations to be handed in is September 23, 2019.

8. If I am eligible for a reward, how and where do I collect it?

  • $350 Level: Cyclist Packages and t-shirts can be picked up during Advance Check-in or at check-in at the start line.
  • $1,000 Level: $1,000 Club Jerseys can be picked up at the MS Society office in Winnipeg starting in late May 2019.
    • Please note: All cyclists who raise over $1000 are also invited to our Night of Champions to be held in November 2019. Invitations will be sent out via email.
  • $2,000 Level: $2000 Club Shorts can be picked up at the MS Society office in Winnipeg starting in late May 2019.
  • $3,000+ Level: Please make your gift card selection (A&L Cycle, Stream N Wood, Bikes and Beyond, Olympia Cycle on Portage, Woodcock Cycle, Chapters/Indigo, Sobey’s/Safeway, VISA or Mission First [a tax receipt in lieu of a gift card]) when you come to pick up your jersey and shorts, or contact your Bike Coordinator at (204) 943-9595 to do so. You will be notified when the gift cards are available for pick-up in our office.
    1. If you do not receive your gift card by December 2019, please contact your Bike Coordinator.
    2. No 2019 gift cards will be issued in the New Year.
  • $12,500+ Level (Individual Total) or $50,000 (Team Total): Please contact Darcey at darcey.hill@mssociety.ca for more information on the Tour of Champions.

Participant Centre

1. What is a personal page?

A personal page is a unique personal webpage provided to you for you to use when asking your friends and family to join your team or to make a donation. You have a default page created for you, but you can personalize this page with your own story by signing in, selecting the “Personal Page” tab, and saving any changes you make.

2. How do I sign into my Participant Centre?

From any page of msbike.ca, click the "Login" link at the top-right of your screen. Enter your username and password; then, once logged in, you’ll be automatically directed to the home page of your Participant Centre.

If you are registered for more than one event, you can access your other Participant Centre(s) by selecting the event after you log in.

3. I forgot my username and/or password. What do I do?

Remember that your username and password are case sensitive. If you have forgotten your username and/or password, you can retrieve it by selecting “Forgot your password or username?” when on the log in page. For further assistance, please contact your Bike Coordinator at (204) 943-9595.

4. How do I change my username, password, email preferences, and/or personal information?

First, sign in to the site using your username and password by clicking the "Login" link at the top-right of the page. Once signed in, click on the "Profile" link to the top right-hand side (next to the “Log Out” button). Click on the “Change/Reset Password" link to update your new password. Click “Edit Your Profile” to change your username and other details of your profile such as mailing address and mailing preferences.

5. How can I see who has donated to me?

Sign in to your Participant Centre and select the “Progress” navigation tab. Scroll down to see your donation receipt history.

6. How do I change my personal goal?

Sign in to your Participant Centre. Under the “Home” tab, select “Change” where it shows your goal. Write the new amount and hit “Submit”.

7. How do I change my team name or team goal?

The Team Captain can change the team goal by signing in to their Participant Centre, clicking the “Progress” tab, and selecting the “Team” tab on the right-hand side. Then simply click the “Change” button under the Team Goal. To change the team's name, please contact your Bike Coordinator at 204-943-9595.


Teams

1. How do I register a team?

First register yourself in order to create a team. You’ll be prompted to create a team during the registration process. Be sure to pick a creative team name!

If you already registered as an individual, but would like to join or start a team, please contact your Bike Coordinator at 204-943-959 with the name of the team you'd like to join or start.

2. How do I change my team name or team goal?

The Team Captain can change the team goal by signing in to their Participant Centre, clicking the “Progress” tab, and selecting the “Team” tab on the right-hand side. Then simply click the “Change” button under the Team Goal. To change the team's name, please contact your Bike Coordinator at 204-943-9595.

3. My team wants to create a custom team jersey! Who should we go through?

Our national MS Bike apparel sponsor, Primal has great solutions for team apparel and a 10% give-back program. Create a team jersey all team members can wear when training to promote your team and MS Bike! Please note that orders take approximately 6 weeks total, so be sure to order with enough time before the tour!
