Our team started without anything to do with riding to find a cure for the disease. Like many Canadians we had mountain bikes in our garage and one day purchased road bikes after we all started following the Tour du France on television. One Saturday afternoon we were in Rona, who was the ride’s national sponsor at the time, and there was brochure on the checkout counter promoting the MS Bike Ride. I said to my wife, “we should do one of these long distance rides”. So we gathered up a few friends and signed up.
It was the start of our association with the MS Society that has continued for over a dozen years. After our first ride we were invited to join a team sponsored by Hotel Five on Fifth Street and Fifth Avenue. We found riding with a team was fun, but the team did not come together for a second year. It was one and done.
We wanted to continue participating in the MS Ride and since I sat a few doors down from Imperial Oil’s VP Marketing I hit him up for some team jerseys. Thus started a 10-year journey as the “On the Run” team featuring the brand of their convenience stores. The “On the Run” team has ridden in the MS Ride since 2008 and has been the largest corporate team participating in the Airdrie to Olds ride for the last half dozen years. Then, as they say all good things come to an end, Imperial sold all their service stations and after a decade our support ended.
But, when one door closes another opens. To make a long story short and after a presentation at Repsol's head office in Madrid the On the Run team is being rebranded. Team Repsol joined the MS Bike Ride. By joining Team Repsol you will be riding with the largest team in the Airdrie to Olds ride! Over the past dozen years our team has raised a half million dollars!!!
