Back in 2009 we received the news that my wonderful Mother was living with Multiple Sclerosis. From that day on life became a bit different for us, but my Mother's wit, determination, strength and courage never changed.
In Ireland 9,000 people and their family members live with MS and Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world, with an estimated 1 in every 385 Canadians living with the disease. MS is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord). The disease attacks myelin, the protective covering of the nerves, causing inflammation and often damaging the myelin. Myelin is necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses through nerve fibres. If damage to myelin is slight, nerve impulses travel with minor interruptions; however, if damage is substantial and if scar tissue replaces the myelin, nerve impulses may be completely disrupted, and the nerve fibres themselves can be damaged. MS is unpredictable and can cause symptoms such as extreme fatigue, lack of coordination, weakness, tingling, impaired sensation, vision problems, bladder problems, cognitive impairment and mood changes. Currently there is no cure, but every day researchers are learning more about what causes MS and are zeroing in on ways to prevent it.
Throughout the years we organised and took part in many fundraising events for the Carlow Branch of MS. These included motor bike runs, church gate collections, shaving my head/wax night, an old coin collection, Daddy climbed Croagh Patrick twice and done some cycles. While my family and friends continue to fund-raise in Ireland I would like to move my own fundraising efforts to my second home here in Sarnia, Ontario where so many people and their families live with Multiple Sclerosis also.
This month on Sunday April 28th I will be taking part in the MS Walk. I am asking my family and friends to please make a donation if you can :) It is my birthday April 23rd and I would like to ask you all to make a donation to MS instead of giving me presents etc. No matter what you can give every cent counts :)
If anyone would like to take part with me please register and fund-raise also!
In honour of my Mother, everyone else who fights this disease daily and those who fought it until the end, this one is for you x
Thank you so much! :)
